چکیده

A new daylight simulation method for radiosity environments is presented. Daylight illumination is transported in a first step where sun and sky are represented as a set of directional sources. Light is transported using parallel projections of these sources. The scene mesh is adaptively subdivided using energy and visibility criteria obtained from a extended scan-line algorithm that computes a layered depth image for each projection. In a second step, diffuse intereflection is computed through a hierarchical Monte Carlo radiosity algorithm. The method is feasible for it extension for environments containing specular surfaces. Relative short time view-independent global illumination results can be obtained with the proposed method, which make it suitable for daylight building design and analysis applications for both indoors and outdoors environments.

Hierarchical Monte Carlo Radiosity

Hierarchical radiosity and Monte Carlo radiosity are branches of radiosity research that focus on complementary problems. The synthesis of both families of radiosity algorithms has however received little attention until now. In this paper, a procedure is presented that bridges the gap. It allows any proposed hierarchical refinement strategy to be investigated in the context of an arbitrary dis...

A novel approach makes higher order wavelets really efficient for radiosity

Since wavelets were introduced in the radiosity algorithm5, surprisingly little research has been devoted to higher order wavelets and their use in radiosity algorithms. A previous study13 has shown that wavelet radiosity, and especially higher order wavelet radiosity was not bringing significant improvements over hierarchical radiosity and was having a very important extra memory cost, thus pr...

Getting Rid of Links in Hierarchical Radiosity

Hierarchical radiosity with clustering has positioned itself as one of the most efficient algorithms for computing global illumination in non-trivial environments. However, using hierarchical radiosity for complex scenes is still problematic due to the necessity of storing a large number of transport coefficients between surfaces in the form of links. In this paper, we eliminate the need for st...

Linear Radiosity with Error Estimation

We present a simple and inexpensive method for computing the estimates of error in a hierarchical linear radiosity method. Similar to the approach used in [1] for constant radiosity method, we compute lower and upper linear bounds of the actual radiosity function over the surface elements. We carry out this by computing linear upper and lower bounds of the kernel of the radiosity equation. Also...

Le contrôle de l'erreur dans la méthode de radiosité hiérarchique. (Error Control in Hierarchical Radiosity)

We introduce several improvements to the hierarchical radiosity method. First, a complete analysis of a specific implementation of the hierarchical radiosity method allows to point out its bottlenecks. Based on this analysis, we suggest two simple improvements: a lazy evaluation of top-level interactions, and a new refinement criterion, that greatly reduces the number of interactions, without l...
